As another year draws to a close, I wonder what 2013 will be remembered for by future generations? Will it be the year when Bitcoin crept into the public consciousness? Unlikely. Will it be the year when Edward Snowden's revelations put privacy and state spying onto the agenda? Probably not. According to Facebook, the most discussed topic by brits in 2013 was Andy Murray winning Wimbledon.

All year long there have been stories about bitcoins appearing in the press, about windfall fortunes and missed opportunities, but as so often happens with internet technology stories, they write as if you ought to already know what a bitcoin is.

This month, Twitter announced that it was letting its advertisers dig even deeper into user data for the purposes of targetting ads. "With tailored audiences you can reach users on Twitter who have shown interest in your brand or your category even away from Twitter" said the company's blog. That may come as a surprise to some. Did you even know there are adverts on Twitter?
Resolutions for 2014
The time approaches when we traditionally express good intentions for the year ahead, intentions that are often gone and forgotten by the second week of January.
